Space Saving Bedroom Ideas

Our bedroom should be a safe haven for relaxation and sleep, but often the daily clutter gets in the way and can leave you feeling stressed and frustrated at having to tidy up before you go to sleep every night. As you can imagine, this feeling isn’t conducive to a good night’s sleep, so what can you do about it?

You may feel like there isn’t enough space for all your belongings, but sometimes, everything just needs a ‘home’ so to speak and by organising everything and potentially investing in some new furniture, you can create space you previously thought impossible.

So, without further ado, here’s our top space saving bedroom ideas.

Use Storage Boxes Under Your Bed

The space underneath your bed is often an unused area for many that could certainly be put to better use. There’s plenty of boxes and bags on the market that are designed to fit nicely underneath your bed, whilst still having more than enough room to store your belongings.

Many of the boxes include handles and wheels too, which make them really easy to wheel in and out when you need to store things away or access your items. Whilst the storage bags that are designed to fit under your bed often feature zips to keep everything sealed and protected. As with any storage option, be sure to not overpack your items and it could also be a good idea to invest in a multipack of silica gel sachets to keep moisture at bay too.

Utilise Shelving Space

Your walls aren’t just for decorative picture frames and snazzy wallpaper, they’re also potentially a fantastic place to store some of your items. By utilising shelves, you can get your belongings up off the floor and neatly organised on your walls. There’s so many options when it comes to shelving too, so you’re sure to find a shelf style and finish that complements your bedroom decor.

Depending on the size, strength and layout of your shelves, they could be perfect for storing books, perfumes, jewellery boxes, plants and even lamps and other light sources. This tip is especially useful if you have a bedroom with high ceilings, allowing you to really take advantage of the vertical space available. Shelves complement any space and you can make them look even more interesting by staggering their installation and putting them on different levels from one another or experimenting with various lengths and widths.

Invest In Multipurpose Storage

When space is at a premium, it’s important to utilise multipurpose storage furniture where you can. Bed side tables with drawers are ideal as they can house your bed side lamp and your latest read on top, whilst also providing hidden storage space for all sorts of belongings in the drawers.

The same goes for furniture items such as chests of drawers and ottoman storage benches. Large chests of drawers can house decorative items and everyday items such as perfumes and jewellery boxes on top, whilst storing your clothes inside the drawers. Whilst storage ottoman benches work as both a storage solution and a comfortable seat to help you put your socks on in a morning.

Grab Yourself A Storage Bed

The ultimate multipurpose furniture item when it comes to offering storage space and another fantastic benefit, storage beds not only look fantastic and provide you with a comfortable space for a good night’s sleep, but their space saving benefits are undeniable too.

There are two types of storage bed to choose from too, allowing you to choose the type of storage offering that suits your needs the most. If more storage space is what you’re after, then an ottoman bed is a great choice

The storage space in an ottoman bed takes up the entire footprint of the bed itself, so there’s plenty of space on offer, even more so if you opt for a king size or super king size ottoman bed. The storage space is easily accessed via an easy to lift mattress platform that’s supported by gas-assisted pistons which keep the mattress in place when it’s open. Those pistons also safely assist the closing of the platform too, once you’ve finished accessing the storage space.

Divan beds on the other hand still offer plenty of easy to access storage space, but in the form of drawers integrated into the bed base itself. This means they are more suitable for storing smaller items such as underwear, books and towels rather than items that can be neatly organised in larger storage boxes or bigger items. Often available with various drawer configurations up to four drawers, divan beds are a great choice if you have smaller items you’d like to store and want to take advantage of the ability to tidy up and organise your bedroom space.

Access to the storage space has to be considered in both cases though with ottoman beds requiring adequate ceiling height and in the case of the side opening ottoman bed variant, sufficient space on the side it opens out onto too. An ottoman bed may be more suitable if you’d find it harder to bend over and open drawers often too.

Get A Thinner Wardrobe

Wardrobes are of course bedroom furniture staples and have been for centuries, so we’re not advocating for you to get rid of yours. But, have you considered potentially downsizing a little and getting your hands on a thinner wardrobe?

A wardrobe that’s more narrow can help to make your bedroom feel more spacious and the downsizing of your wardrobe may even cause you to have to relook at your clothes, giving you a great opportunity to take those clothes that are no longer your style or don’t quite fit right anymore to the charity shop. You may then find that you don’t need a bulkier wardrobe anyway.

To make the most of the space that’s available to you in your smaller wardrobe, we recommend investing in slimline hangars and hanging organisers which can help to keep everything neat and tidy. Look to utilise boxes at the bottom of your wardrobe too, as they’ll make it easier to neatly organise and store your belongings.

Hang It Up

We’ve already talked about utilising shelves to store items and make more of your bedroom space, but installing various wall hooks in your bedroom is a great idea too. They’re perfect for hanging scarves, jackets, bags and dressing gowns and they look really neat and tidy too. There’s plenty of designs to choose from too, from simply using individual wall hooks to stylish, decorative wooden peg rails and wall mounted racks. A well placed hook (or two) can certainly make a big difference when it comes to space saving.

Raise It Up

A neat little tip to make your bedroom feel bigger than it is but not necessarily providing you with more space, is to opt for bedroom furniture that features visible legs. The raised legs give the illusion of more space and allow light to pass underneath too. Choosing slender, more elevated furniture pieces can make your bedroom feel more airy and lighter, especially compared to the effect bulkier more solid furniture can have.

Create The Illusion Of Space

Another great tip when it comes to making your bedroom feel bigger is to utilise mirrors. Whether it’s one large feature mirror or strategically placed smaller mirrors throughout your bedroom. They provide the illusion of more space and reflect light around the room too, making it feel much more inviting. Mirrored furniture such as our Ernie range is a great option too, giving you a two for one benefit with additional storage space and the illusion of a bigger bedroom.
