How To Organise The Storage Space In Your Ottoman Bed

Ottoman beds provide you with a lot of additional storage space, so it’s easy to think because there’s plenty of space, you can just place items in there willy nilly. However by doing so, you may find your space is filling up quicker than you thought. This is where planning and organisation comes in.

By planning from the outset, you’re more likely to make efficient use of all the storage space available and it’ll make it so much easier to find what you’re looking for too.

So, here’s our top tips for a super organised storage space underneath your ottoman bed.

Categorise & Group Your Items

Before you get to work putting your items into the storage space situated underneath your ottoman bed, you need to sit down and categorise everything you’re going to be storing there. This will allow you to plan out the layout of all your items and group them together, making it easier to find them when you need to.

So grab a pen and paper (or use your chosen notes app on your phone, whatever takes your fancy) and start to think about what items you want to store away underneath your bed. We find that the ottoman bed storage is perfect for seasonal items and keepsakes, but also anything you might need to grab at a moment’s notice, as long as it’s stored on top (more on this later).

If you have the space, we recommend spreading all the items you wish to store out on your floor so you can see everything clearly. Then start to group them into categories, such as clothes, keepsakes, toiletries, books etc. Once you’ve done this, you can then start to categorise them even further if you choose (this depends on your storage methods), so for example, with your clothes, you could start to break them out like so; socks and underwear, dresses, hats and so on. This is only really useful if you will be splitting your items into boxes to this level though. If you’ll be putting all your clothes into one box/one area, it isn’t necessary.

Once everything’s neatly categorised, we recommend grouping the different items into their categories on your floor, making it easier to pick them up and put them into your bed’s storage space.

Use Storage Boxes & Dividers

Rather than just placing your items into neat piles within your ottoman bed’s storage space, we recommend looking into the variety of storage boxes and dividers that are available. These are perfect for neatly organising your items, keeping them protected and are designed to fit neatly underneath your bed.

There’s plenty of choices available when it comes to storage boxes, from clear plastic boxes which are sturdy and make it easier to see what items are where, to various fabric options which have zips to access your items. Then there’s the various divider options on the market, which are perfect for neatly organising your belongings. These often come in different sizes to accommodate different types of items, such as shoes, books or even jewellery. They’re very versatile, so can be used to store whatever items are suitable for the divided space they create.

We recommend using a combination of the two to create a neatly organised storage space that looks clean and tidy and makes the process of finding your stored away items quick and easy.

When it comes to seasonal items that you’re intending to store away for a longer period of time until you need them, you could also use vacuum bags, which are designed to maximise space and keep your items protected from dust, moisture and any potential damage.

By neatly organising your items into a combination of storage boxes, vacuum bags and dividers, not only are you making it easier for yourself to find what you’re looking for, but you’re also making the most of the space available to you.

Use Labels

This additional step takes the last tip to the next level of efficiency. Using sticky labels to clearly mark up the boxes, bags and dividers that you use. By doing so, you further cut down the time it takes to identify where the item you need is and makes it easier when storing new items too.

All you need is some simple sticky labels and a permanent marker pen (or pens of different colours if you also want to colour code your storage space). Make sure your writing is nice and clear so you can quickly understand it. We suggest using block capitals as they’re often easier to read at a glance. Then simply place the stickers on the roof of boxes, on top of vacuum bags and the sides and backs of the dividers.

Use All The Space Available

It’s important to take advantage of all the space available to you when it comes to your ottoman bed. That includes the vertical space as well as the larger horizontal area. You will of course need to measure the depth of your storage space to understand what you can store inside, but you may find that you can stack some items on top of one another, allowing you to store more items within the available space.

Just be sure to check the stability of the boxes and dividers you’re storing your items in to make sure they can withstand the weight on top. The last thing you want is to accidentally damage any of your items. But most storage boxes are designed to stack on top of one another, so you should be alright.

It’s also important to ensure all your storage boxes and dividers are placed in the most efficient layout too. The best way to treat this is like one big game of Tetris. With all the different shapes and sizes, you may end up with ‘wasted space’ the first time you put everything away. But just continue to move them all around, taking boxes and dividers in and out and eventually you’ll find the perfect layout that makes the most of the storage space.

Keep It Fresh

Having enough space for all your clothes is often a challenge for most of us. This challenge is made even harder by the presence of clothes that it’s either too cold or too hot to wear right now. These items take up valuable space that could instead be occupied by all your new seasonal wear. This is where your ottoman bed storage space comes in.

By organising the ottoman storage space in such a way that seasonal clothes can be neatly stored away until you need them, you immediately get more space for the clothes you want to wear right now. Plus you know, your Summer/Winter clothes are safe and sound and ready for you whenever the weather turns. We recommend using a vacuum bag to store all your seasonal dresses, shirts, shorts and wooly jumpers away, keeping them protected and ready to go, when the time is right.

Effectively Organise Your Storage Space

By effectively and efficiently organising your storage space and planning where each and every item goes from the outset, you’ll have a much more efficient storage system and use the storage space available to you much better.

It’ll make finding the items you need much quicker and easier and will make the process of putting things away much easier too. Plus, it looks fantastic too and really gives you that satisfying feeling that everything’s in its right place.

We really hope these tips have been helpful and that you’ve found them useful enough to put them into action. We definitely feel like you won’t regret it if you do. A more organised and decluttered home is a happier one and our ottoman beds combined with these storage ideas can help you to achieve that.
